News – Trauer um Reg Austin

Reg Austin, der sich für ein freies Zimbabwe einsetzte, ist am 23. April verstorben
Professor Reginald Austin war ein zimbabwischer Rechtswissenschaftler. Seit 1960 engagierte er sich im In- und Ausland für die Unabhängigkeit und Demokratie seines Landes. Er war Gründungsdekan der juristischen Fakultät der Universität Zimbabwe bis 1992. Danach arbeitete er für die UNO an wahlbasierten Übergangsprozessen nach Konflikten in Kambodscha, Südafrika, auf den Salomonen, in Afghanistan und in Osttimor. Zwischen 1994 und 2002 arbeitete er beim Commonwealth-Sekretariat in London und bei International IDEA in Stockholm. Von 2009 bis 2013 war er Vorsitzender der zimbabwischen Menschenrechtskommission.

Reg Austin, who fought for a free Zimbabwe, passed away 23 April
Professor Reginald Austin was a Zimbabwean legal scholar. Since 1960, he had been actively involved both at home and abroad in the struggle for his country’s independence and democracy. He served as the founding dean of the University of Zimbabwe’s law school until 1992. He subsequently worked for the UN on election-based post-conflict transition processes in Cambodia, South Africa, the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and East Timor. Between 1994 and 2002, he worked at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and at International IDEA in Stockholm. From 2009 to 2013, he served as chair of the Zimbabwean Human Rights Commission.
