SOUTH AFRICA: Morkel throws in the towel

Western Cape Premier Gerald Morkel has quit. He made the announcement at Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town on 10th of November morning. Morkel said he would resign as premier and also as provincial leader of the New National Party with effect from close of business Monday. „Because I believe with all my heart, and soul, and strength, that the NNP leadership has now embarked on a path of betrayal, I find myself in a position where I can no longer, in good conscience, continue as premier of this province and provincial leader of the NNP." The NNP leadership had decided to leave the „Democratic Allaince".
