No replacement of teachers during strike

The Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) has announced that their strike will commence on 13 October 2016.
"There will be no replacement of teachers during the indefinite strike," said Nantu secretary general Basilius Haingura.

Over 95% of teachers recently voted in favour of a strike to demand an 8% salary increase from government.
Nantu's announcement follows an almost two week long deliberation with government and the Office of the Labour Commissioner on the ground rules for the industrial action that was finalised Friday afternoon.

Haingura said they have issued government, the labour commissioner and the police with a seven day notice period to allow for preparations. Haingura also said that teachers who will not join the strike are free to invigilate during the exams but emphasised that pupils' work in all the grades will not be assessed. He, however, said that government was free to hire markers for exams.

As per the agreed rules, striking teachers will picket at least 500 metres away from public school grounds.

Haingura said they will mobilise all the structures within the union to communicate with their members on the preparations for the strike. (The Namibian, Windhoek)
