MEC Confirms There Will Be a Recount of All Votes
The Malawi Election Commission (MEC) has determined that there will be a vote verification exercise which will involve opening all ballot boxes countrywide. Addressing a highly charged press conference that was attended by party representatives, MEC Chairperson, Justice Maxon Mbendera said this was important to make sure that results released are credible and acceptable to all parties.
On when the results will be announced, Mbendera said it would take atleast 30 days and MEC will announce the results 'only when the concerns are sorted out.' He also revealed that MEC will seek assistance from reputable Civil Society Organisations to help with the recount and also ask parties to send senior officials to help with vote recount.
Malawians voted on 20 May and there have been mixed reactions to the unofficial results with complains of irregularities and alleged 'rigging' from some parties hence they called for verification through a recount.
