Government in search of lasting solution after San appeal

After the Botswana's Court of Appeal had ordered that the San people of Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) were to be allowed to re-commission a borehole in the Reserve, the Government of Botswana let know that it noted the decision of the Court. In a press statement the Government however emphasised that it did not agree with certain aspects of the basis on which the decision was reached, but that it recognised the decision. As such, the Government of Botswana would, in line with its established policy of respect for the decisions of the Courts and the rule of law, facilitate implementation of the Court’s decision as reflected in the order, the statement further noted.

Furthermore the Botswana Government stated its firm view that the CKGR was “a national resource to be used for the benefit of all citizens of Botswana”, and that any issues regarding the reserve could not be resolved by recourse to the Courts. In that regard, the Botswana Government announced that it would continue “the dialogue which has been ongoing with the residents of the CKGR and other stakeholders, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the matter”. Finally, the Botswana Government stated that it wanted to reiterate its commitment to improving the quality of life for all its citizens. (SADOCC)
