Dos Santos prepares for 2012 poll
In his President state-of-the-nation address to the citizenry in Luanda, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said focused on the looming 2012 general election. He informed that voter registration process would be readjusted to make the 2012 electoral process feasible. For this to happen, the President emphasised that various projects would be launched in 2011, particularly in the sectors of agriculture, energy, mining and infrastructure. He added that, “The national economy will recover its high indexes of growth next year, thus generating more resources to allocate to the social sectors in 2012."
Dos Santos also added that the processes of economic, administrative and judicial reforms that was currently being undertaken would be finalised by 2011 to improve the national economy.He ended his message by highlighting that Angola had everything to be a model country in Africa, a regional power that guaranteed the wellbeing for all citizens.
Under the terms of the new constitution which was approved early in 2010, dos Santos will not face a direct presidential election. He will instead be automatically elected from the top of legislative poll lists.
The first legislative election in 16 years was held in 2008, which was won by dos Santos's Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party.
