Suspicious death of labour activist in custody
The Swazi labour movement's May Day celebrations were violently interrupted by the police this year. While the whole event was rendered all but impossible, the most serious incident was the death in custody of labour activist Sipho Stephen Jele. He was arrested for wearing a PUDEMO (Swaziland's biggest opposition party, proscribed under the much contested "Suppression of Terrorism" Act) T-shirt and died two days later. The police claims he committed suicide in the toilet of a prison cell.
