NUNW wants transport minister to resign

The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) has thrown its weight behind the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) in demanding the resignation of Works and Transport Minister Helmut Angula. The union accuses him of "illegally" appointing the new board of directors of the State-owned company TransNamib, by allegedly failing to follow correct procedures. In a statement largely copied from that of the SPYL a week ago, the NUNW blames Angula for not putting the names of potential board members before the State-owned Enterprises Governance Council for consideration, and the council's chairperson, Prime Minister Nahas Angula, for just rubberstamping the choice of board members.
Like the SPYL a week ago, NUNW's Moses Shiikwe made unsubstantiated claims that Government was "selling out" the Etosha National Park to USA companies under a US$300 million development scheme run by a US state-owned outfit, the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA). Waving a bulky file in the air, Shiikwe said all details on the Etosha "trade-off" were contained in it and would be made public next month, should Government fail to come clear on the issue. Despite several requests from reporters for details on the Etosha file, Shiikwe refused.
The NUNW further blamed Government for allowing "illegal diamond mining" at Toscanini on the Skeleton Coast. "Failure [of Government] to investigate this, we will publicly expose all information," Shiikwe threatened. (The Namibian, Windhoek)
