Starvation threat in Lesotho

More than two million people in Lesotho are heading for starvation due to the loss of their crops from the drought devastating the nation. Specialized media alerted that the kingdom could be the next African humanitarian catastrophe, during the austral winter. The corn crop, mainstay of the local diet, is exhausted and fields have been opened to cattle to graze. Sechaba Mojau, chief of Mohale Hoek region, emphasized that 70 percent of the crops failed. This is the third consecutive "lean year" for the kingdom which main profits come from agriculture and emigrants’ remittances from South Africa, which now are very low because of the closing of some mines and the plunge in tourism.
