Dates for general election fixed

Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano has issued a decree fixing December 1st and 2nd 2004 as the dates for the country's third multi-party presidential and parliamentary elections. Chissano's decision took into account that the elections must be held before the end of the year, and followed a proposal from the National Elections Commission (CNE). Meanwhile, the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE), the electoral branch of the civil service, started this week to distribute civic education materials in preparation for voter registration.
